Your first morning will be one you’ll never forget. Set your alarm early to catch the sunrise. Stepping outside with a warm cup of coffee, you’ll be greeted by the calming silence of nature. The sound of a gentle breeze through the massive trees stirs the birds from their sleep, and their songs fill the air as the sun rises and paints the valley and creek in vibrant hues. If you’re a birdwatcher, this is a paradise—over 50 species can be spotted right on the property.

As the morning unfolds, the elk begin to emerge from the trees, grazing near the creek in the meadow. Binoculars are a must to get a closer look at these majestic creatures. We were fortunate to witness an entire herd of elk, with a count of 85 one day!

- Catherine Creek State Park Hiking – Just a mile up the road are beautiful bridges and miles of hiking trails as part of a state park.
- Buffalo Peak Golf Course – Just 8 miles from the property, FOUR!
- Anthony Ski Lakes – some of the best powder around for snowboarders and ski!
- Horseback Riding Lessons – Victory Farms and others offer horseback riding lessons and experiences in the area.
- Annual Ladd Marsh Bird Festival – There is an awesome marsh in the region with tons of wildlife and an annual bird festival mid-May every year.
- Platz Farmers Market – 1st Street. Fresh eggs, fruit, vegetables, salsa and more. May – Oct
- La Grande Farmers Market – less than a 20 minute drive for meat, produce and other goods. May – Oct
- Hines Meat Market – La Grande amazing jerky, meats, cheeses, dips and more. Try the Hillbilly Jerky!
- Haines Steak House – A must if you haven’t and worth the drive!
- National Historic Oregon Trail Museum – An amazing walk through history of the Oregon Trail.
- Baker City Historic Museum
- Minam Wilderness – An amazing place of beauty. You can hike in from Cove, OR to the lodge and grab lunch for the day. Great fishing too, bring your rod! There is a longer gravel road drive you can also find to get a view of it to west. Bring water and backup gear.
- Mountain Goat Viewing – In winter months of January through April mountain goats winter in the mountain area visible from the Perry Exit just west of La Grande. Drive on I-84 to the exist and look to the south with the naked eye or binoculars. Just a few hundred yards up you frequently see mountain goats in this area!
- Bighorn Sheep Viewing – East on I-84 from Union is the Burnt River Canyon area. Take the Durkee exit up into the canyon (good gravel road). The best viewing is in the early morning and late in the evening during winter and early spring months.
- Joseph & The Wallowa Mountains – if you’re up for a day trip around the moutains to Joseph you won’t regret it. A few hours away is a crown jewel lake of Oregon, cable car to the top of the mountain, great kokanee and trout fishing, quaint mountain village shops and entertainment and more. A winter paradise too!
- Mushrooms – Our cabin is perfectly situated in the heart of the woods where mushrooms thrive.
- Upper Mountain Lakes – Not far from the cabin are upper mountain lakes, for the more physically fit and inspired.
- Drive the loop of Medical Springs over to Baker and back around to home on the old highway back into Union. There is some great history and small places to view and enjoy along the way. Hit Haines Steak house, near Baker, to make a night of it!
